Reds to show respect with poppy shirts
  4th Nov 2013

The Liverpool team will wear special shirts embroidered with poppies when they host Fulham at Anfield in the Barclays Premier League this Saturday, November 9.

As part of plans to commemorate Remembrance weekend, Reds players will also sign their jerseys, which will subsequently be donated to the Royal British Legion to raise valuable funds.

In addition to a minute's silence before kick-off, army reserve soldiers, Lance Corporal Jimmy Parsons and Private Jamie McLaughlin - led by standard bearer Brian Fearn - will carry a large poppy to the centre circle.

Further support for the Poppy Appeal will be given through an article published in the matchday programme, perimeter board advertising and a pre-match bucket collection.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said: "Everybody has the greatest respect for the members of those involved in the armed forces, and their families.

"It's important that the players and the fans have the opportunity to pay their respects together at Anfield this weekend. I'd like to thank all of the Liverpool fans who are currently serving in the armed forces for the amazing work they do."

Lance Corporal Parsons commented: "I was really shocked when I first found out about carrying the poppy, but it is such an honour and I am delighted. It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Private McLaughlin added: "I felt much the same. I am really nervous about it but I know I will enjoy it and it's for an extremely good cause."
