Reds to show respect with poppy shirts
  3rd Nov 2014

Liverpool players will wear special shirts embroidered with poppies when they host Chelsea at Anfield in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday November 8.

As part of plans to commemorate Remembrance weekend and the centenary of World War One, the Reds will also sign their jerseys and donate them to the Royal British Legion for auction to raise valuable funds.

Last year, the shirts donated from the club's Remembrance weekend fixture against Fulham raised more than Ј25,000 for the Poppy Appeal.

In addition to a minute of silence before kick-off, two Liverpool Pals veterans, Joe McGowan and Brad Gilbart, led by standard bearer, Ian Mackie, will carry a large poppy to the centre-circle, dressed in WWI regalia.

Further support for the Poppy Appeal will be given through an article published in the matchday programme, perimeter LED board advertising and a pre-match bucket collection.

Liverpool vice-captain, Jordan Henderson, said: "It's really important that the team and the fans have the opportunity to pay their respects together at Anfield this weekend and remember all of those who lost their lives serving their country.

"I'd like to thank all of those involved in the armed forces, and their families for the amazing work they do."

  Gerrard presents signed poppy jerseys
  26th Nov 2014

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard made a special presentation to the Poppy Appeal at Melwood this week, which will help raise funds for The Royal British Legion.

The Reds midfielder presented the signed poppy shirts that the team wore during their Barclays Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Anfield on November 8, 2014.

Andrew Moore, John Grimes and David Fearon, who are all serving soldiers with the 4th Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, received the special jerseys alongside Bill Martin, the membership support officer Merseyside/West Lancashire for The Royal British Legion.

All 23 shirts will now be auctioned on eBay, with all monies raised to go towards providing essential care and support to serving members of the armed forces, veterans of all ages and their families.

Gerrard commented: "It's always an honour for the team to wear the poppy on our shirts and this year is particularly special in marking 100 years since World War I.

"We are thankful to all who serve in the armed forces for the amazing work that they do in serving our country."

Gerrard with RBL staff, and lots of Poppy shirts laid on the table, some shirts have darker poppy and others with lighter poppy.

Martin added: "On behalf of The Royal British Legion, I would like to thank the club for the support they have given to the Poppy Appeal over the past six years.

"The backing we receive is so important and enables us to raise vital funds which help support our work that we deliver to serving members of the armed forces and ex-personnel across the Merseyside region and beyond.

"Last year, the shirts donated from the Fulham fixture raised more than Ј26,000 for the Poppy Appeal. It would be fantastic if we can achieve that figure again this year or, even better, beat it."
