Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat by a clinical Manchester City on Monday evening, subjecting Brendan Rodgers' charges to a first loss of the campaign in their second fixture of 2014-15.

The sting in the tail of an opening half that the Reds thoroughly dominated arrived four minutes before the break via the vicious boot of Stevan Jovetic, and it was the same scorer shortly after the restart to double City's advantage.

Daniel Sturridge had a strike chalked off due to offside and was unlucky on several occasions to find Joe Hart in careful form, allowing substitute Sergio Aguero to claim a third and game-settler with his first touch upon entering the field.

A consolation followed and a goal that Rickie Lambert will be determined to claim as his own, with the late substitute helping to bustle the ball over the line alongside Pablo Zabaleta after his initial attempt was saved.

When teamsheets were submitted ahead of kick-off, Rodgers' Liverpool version confirmed a debut for Spanish full-back Alberto Moreno, with fellow summer recruit Lazar Markovic named among the substitutes. Joe Allen replaced Lucas Leiva in midfield from the start.

The early exchanges were even, although the Reds threatened twice in quick succession when Sturridge almost slipped Raheem Sterling into the City six-yard box and the No.15 himself could not conjure an opportunity from Allen's precise centre. Edin Dzeko scuffed wide in response.

More dangerously for the travellers, Zabaleta stole in at the back post and volleyed too high to concern Simon Mignolet, who was comfortable but necessarily alert moments later when Yaya Toure collected a loose ball in shooting range and side-footed at the top right corner.

Clear-cut chances were at a relative minimum but there was one team controlling possession and dictating the tempo, and it was Liverpool. With Allen providing diligence along the left side and the midfield passing particularly crisp, Manuel Pellegrini's charges were on the back foot.

Sterling clipped a delightful, arrowed delivery inside the City backline on the half-hour that momentarily seemed to have set up Jordan Henderson for a finish in front of Hart, but the midfielder was immediately crowded out.

The home goalkeeper was forced into a reflex near-post stop when Sturridge cushioned a long-range cross-field hit from Sterling and danced around his marker. The eventual shot was struck fiercely and on target, but Hart was equal to the challenge.

For all that, however, it was the hosts who found a breakthrough in the 41st minute. As the Reds failed to sufficiently clear their lines from a City attack in the right channel, Jovetic pounced to bustle beyond Moreno and thrash low underneath Mignolet for the opener.

Three minutes into the second half, Sturridge found the net with a clinical finish, latching onto an accurate right-flank Glen Johnson cross, but celebrations among nearby Kopites were short-lived as the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside.

Within seconds, Moreno crucially raced from one wing to the other to thwart Dzeko at the last moment as the striker bulldozed in behind. In similar fashion, Zabaleta stopped Henderson when the No.14 took Steven Gerrard's clever set-piece and attempted to score.

There was no preventing Jovetic from grabbing a second goal, though. The tricky forward drifted into freedom inside Reds territory on 55 minutes and was in the perfect location when Samir Nasri clipped into the middle for a calm conversion past Johnson and Mignolet on the goalline.

Those events prompted Rodgers to introduce Markovic for his competitive Liverpool debut and the Serbian's impact was almost instantaneous; his knock inside from the left married with Sturridge's run but last weekend's match-winner was denied by Vincent Kompany's block tackle.

Next to keep the prolific striker at bay, having been played through by Sterling and swerved around the City captain, was Hart, who threw out an arm to parry away his whipped effort across goal. It would prove pivotal.

For Pellegrini called on the services of Aguero, who was picked out by a sweeping outside-to-in Jesus Navas assist and required a single touch to redirect low around Mignolet and ensure that all three points would be remaining at the Etihad.

Not that the Reds gave up; indeed, they registered on the scoresheet with seven minutes left on the clock. Sturridge held possession on the right edge of the opposition area and swept into the centre, where Lambert forced over the line at the second time of asking for a mere consolation.

  Notes:

  - Rickie Lambert makes his LFC debut

  - Dejan Lovren makes his LFC debut

  - Javier Manquillo makes his LFC debut

  - Daniel Sturridge's 36th goal in his 50th match for Liverpool. Only outdone by George Allan's 41 goals in 1895-97 and half of those were in Second Division. Torres third on the list with 34 in his first 50 LFC matches.

Daniel Sturridge tapped home from close range with little over 10 minutes remaining to ensure Liverpool kicked off their 2014-15 campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over a determined Southampton at Anfield.

Raheem Sterling capitalised on outstanding work by Jordan Henderson to coolly send his side ahead midway through the opening period, but the Saints struck back via the boot of full-back Nathaniel Clyne shortly after the restart.

But it was Sturridge who had the decisive say on the final result, contorting his body perfectly to redirect Sterling's header back into the danger area beyond Fraser Forster to snatch a crucial winner for Brendan Rodgers' charges.

The manager's maiden starting XI featured the return of Lucas Leiva in midfield and, notably, competitive debuts for summer signings Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo inside a packed stadium ready to inspire their team to an opening day victory.

After six minutes of gauging the different players and challenges of a new season, Sterling galloped in behind the Southampton defence from his left-wing starting berth to marry with a bobbling Sturridge pass but was forced too wide by Jose Fonte to genuinely threaten.

The Reds' No.15 took an altogether more direct approach seconds later by simply launching an angled drive toward the top corner from fully 30 yards that sailed narrowly off target. Referee Mark Clattenburg was uninterested when the striker was then felled by Maya Yoshida at the edge of the penalty area.

With the Anfield clock showing 20 minutes, Sterling again penetrated the visiting backline; Lovren passed into Philippe Coutinho, who in turn found his attacking colleague. The eventual left-footer was at a comfortable height for Forster to calmly collect, however.

The pressure was clearly increasing, though, and three minutes on, it told. And pressure was the key word - Henderson closed down on halfway and refused to concede defeat, winning back possession and immediately clipping a sensational 40-yard ball through the middle and into the run of Sterling. This time the 19-year-old was totally free and he picked out the bottom corner for 1-0.

When afforded the opportunity, Ronald Koeman's side were showing the smart distribution and diligent ethic that characterised their efforts in 2013-14. But their closest attempt to date actually originated from a swinging set-piece by James Ward-Prowse that needed to be tipped over at the final moment by Simon Mignolet.

It was the same opponent who subsequently shaped to shoot from 20 yards but merely directed into the grateful hands of the Liverpool goalkeeper. Morgan Schneiderlin must have thought his vicious hit from the left corner of Reds territory was going to nestle in, but Mignolet leaped to claw over the crossbar.

There was still time in the period for Henderson to tee up Sterling once more, but the forward's quick-thinking blast at the Kop end was acrobatically palmed out by Forster, ensuring that the two teams paused for a break with the scoreline unaltered.

The Saints controlled the fledgling stages of the second half but when a response was mustered, it was the trident of Lovren, Coutinho and Sterling that created an opening. But the latter's punt off the laces as he edged wider was little danger to the travellers' goal.

At the other end, the net was soon bulging. Stationed on the right flank, Clyne clipped a low, diagonal pass into Dusan Tadic a yard inside the Liverpool box and scampered onto the clever back-flick, before slamming an unstoppable finish into the roof of the net for a well-crafted equaliser.

For all that Mignolet could do nothing about that strike, the hosts had the Belgian stopper to thank for maintaining parity when Southampton sliced open the defence along the left channel and worked possession to Steven Davis, who was completely free to side-foot at goal but saw his attempt thwarted.

Kopites rose when Glen Johnson worked the ball inside from the left to substitute Joe Allen and in turn it was knocked on to Henderson - the England international could only drag his strike wide as the encounter entered its final quarter-hour tantalisingly poised.

No matter, the ground was entitled to erupt on 79 minutes. Henderson's centre was not adequately cleared by the Saints, allowing Sterling to powerfully head back into the danger area, where Sturridge was the right man in the right place at the right time.

Still there was drama, though. A direct attack by the visitors resulted in Schneiderlin cracking an effort that Mignolet incredibly tipped against the crossbar - and down but not over the line. Shane Long pounced but nodded the rebound wide, meaning Liverpool finally took the spoils.

  - Mario Balotelli makes his LFC debut

  - Alberto Moreno scores his debut goal for LFC

  - Average age of the Liverpool starting lineup: 24.58
- Steven Gerrard goes to the top of Liverpool's penalty-scoring list with his 43rd successful penalty for the club and so goes past Jan Mшlby's total of 42 successful spot-kicks. Gerrard also becomes the first player in the club's entire history to score in sixteen successive seasons (Billy Liddell scored in fifteen).

Liverpool were in rampant mood as they powered to a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Brendan Rodgers' 100th match in charge.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring with just eight minutes on the clock at White Hart Lane, converting from close range after excellent build-up play between Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson had dissected the home defence.

Steven Gerrard made it 2-0 from the spot shortly after the break, netting from 12 yards to become the Reds' most successful penalty taker of all time with 43.

Alberto Moreno furthered the advantage with a stunning solo effort, charging forward from deep before arrowing a left-footed drive into the far corner with an hour gone.

There were chances to increase the lead - not least when Sterling skipped his way through only to prod tamely at goal - as Liverpool signed off for the international break in emphatic fashion.

The pre-match team news confirmed a debut for Balotelli, with the striker lining up alongside Sturridge and Sterling in attack.

Elsewhere, injuries to Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel meant starting berths for Javier Manquillo and Mamadou Sakho at the back.

Kick off signified Rodgers' century of matches at the helm, coming at the scene of one of the finest performances of his tenure.

Last season's corresponding fixture had ended 5-0 in favour of Liverpool - and there were just two minutes on the clock when the visitors almost made a dream start.

Sturridge's brilliant delivery from the left picked out the head of Balotelli, whose powerful downward header was repelled by Hugo Lloris.

The Reds didn't have to wait long to break the deadlock, however, as moments later, Sturridge's pass found Henderson's run into the area. He in turn slipped a ball across the face of goal, allowing Sterling to slot home at the back post.

That goal equalled the club record of netting in 16 consecutive away league matches, set between May 1987 and March 1988.

And Liverpool were looking dangerous in the sunshine, with Sturridge's edge-of-the-box drive had Lloris scrambling across his line soon after.

Next, a pinpoint in-swinging free-kick from Steven Gerrard again found the head of Balotelli, who glanced wide at the far post.

At the other end, an excellent recovery challenge by Dejan Lovren prevented Emmanuel Adebayor from getting a run at Simon Mignolet's goal after Sakho had conceded possession inside his own half.

Back came the Reds and after Sturridge had tested Lloris from range, the goalkeeper's wayward clearance found Balotelli 40 yards out, but he couldn't direct it into the unguarded net with his first-time effort.

Three minutes before the break, Liverpool had Mignolet to thank for keeping their lead intact when a long ball forward bounced through for Nacer Chadli, but his blast was beaten over the bar by the custodian.

It would prove a crucial moment as shortly after the re-start, Rodgers' side were handed the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot after Joe Allen was brought down in the area by Eric Dier.

Gerrard stepped up to do the honours, and duly netted to make it 2-0 and in the process become the club's highest scoring penalty taker of all time with 43 successful conversions, surpassing Jan Molby's long-standing record.

It also meant he was the first Reds player in history to score in 16 successive seasons.

And the visitors weren't finished as Moreno added a third on the hour, powering down the left from deep and sweetly striking across Lloris and into the far corner.

Sturridge and Lovren then tried their luck before Sterling was left holding his head in his hands after dancing beyond three Spurs defenders in the box before scuffing his shot when a goal-of-the-season contender appeared inevitable.

A fourth goal didn't arrive, but three goals, three points and a scintillating attacking performance made for an afternoon's work to savour for Liverpool.
