1977-78 Home players
shirt
Manufacturer: Umbro (made in England)
Years worn: 1976-78 & 1978 to 1982
In this design home shirt (big UMBRO logo) Liverpool first played in ...
In a season 1976-77 the design home shirt has changed. Liverpool used home shirt
two seasons, 1976-77 & 1977-78. Liverpool used home shirt how in all home, as and in
more away matches. In season 1977-78, Liverpool used with home shirt different kits:
Home shorts and home socks
Second home shorts and home socks
In 1976 the home kit changed slightly with a V-neck replacing
the collar and the embellishments on the kit becoming yellow. For some reason yellow was a
very popular colour in football kits in the late 1970s. Almost all scarves at the time
included a yellow stripe, irrespective of the club colours. Although it has also been said
that the yellow appeared to commemorate the winning of the European Cup.
This standard design of a home shirt, Liverpool used it with some changes seven
seasons with 1976 on 1982. In 1978 logo Umbro has changed Umbro logo size some small, In
1979 on shirts has appeared big letter HITACHI, in 1980 small letter HITACHI.

This image with home match Division One versus
Tottenham Hotspur (02.09.1978), show Steve Heighway (small UMBRO logo) and Graeme Souness
(big UMBRO logo) in different shirts in one match. Why Graeme Souness has put on this
shirt, success or for other season, can be and in some other matches, shirts of old design
- with big UMBRO logo have been used. This was and in seasons 1978-79, 1979-80 &
1980-81, may be & 1981-82.
In season 1977-78, Liverpool used home shirt with special embroidery, for match
League Cup Final (18.03.1978) & for match European Cup Final (10.05.1978). |
In League Cup Final Replay (22.03.1978) match was used simple home shirt (photo in
top left page, Ray Kennedy H 1.2), in shirt not was special embroidery to this match. The
special embroidery as was absent in matches League Cup Final 1981, 1982, 1983 & 1984.
In European Super Cup (22.11.1977 & 06.12.1977) matches was used simple home
shirt (photo in top left page, David Fairclough H 1.5), in shirt not was special
embroidery to this match. The special embroidery as was absent in matches European Super
Cup 1978 & 1984.
In Testimonial Ian Callaghan (19.09.1977) match was used simple home shirt (photo
in top left page, Ian Callaghan H 1.6).
All season 1977-78 Liverpool used home shorts (white printed Umbro logo), only in
last match season was used second home shorts (embroidered yellow club emblem & Umbro
logo). Second home shorts (embroidered yellow club emblem & Umbro logo), Liverpool
will used with 1978-79 on 1981-82. With season 1977-78 on home shorts have club emblem.
How to distinguish a home shirt of a season 1976-77, from a home shirt of a
season 1977-78, very difficultly, I not know how.

|
This yellow stamp, text and
Umbro logo which have on home shirt, which are on a shirt in a bottom, on the right. This
stamp only black, have on away shirt. Main other, not all player shirts have this stamp,
why as, I now not know. This stamp only black color, I to see on home shirt in season
1970-71 (on FA Cup Final shirt). |
Home shirt seasons 1976-77 & 1977-78 was made of fabric nylon. as and was made
of fabric bri-nelon.

Tommy Smith getting help from Ronnie Moran. Ronnie Moran, who
is part of the team's staff, performed medical care for Liverpool players during the
match. But this is not interesting, Ronnie is wearing a tracksuit top with special
embroidery for the Charity Shield match. Only this fragment of away Division One match
versus Norwich City (10.12.1977).

|
Funny moment: In home match Division One versus Manchester United (25.02.1978), after
atack on United gate, at Emlyn shorts on the right side have torn. On a photo on the
right, you see the moment of disguise of shorts. Emlin Hughes is helped with it by Ronnie
Moran. As was in football! |
As the made Liverpool kits on factory
Umbro in the end 70s, and then where they were stored in club was produced, look and read here.
Home shirt with second home shorts (yellow club emblem & Umbro logo) & home
socks was used in match:

According to my observations on the widely available (and
highly priced) replica shirts, the Liverbird on the replicas can either be felt embossed
or embroidered. But the UMBRO logo and letters on the replica shirts I have seen are felt
embossed. And only on a players shirt you can find it beautifully embroidered.
All player shirts must have the Umbro logo and Liverbird
fully embroidered into the shirt. However, there is a mix of official replicas either with
felt-velveteen Umbro motif and Liverbird, or embroidered ones.
Player's number on backside is a piece of machine-stitched
cloth.
Note that Liverpool FC did not release any replicas shirts
prior to season 1978-1979.

Main change this color UMBRO logo & Liverbird. In some away match was used away

In season 1977-78, Liverpool used away shirt witn big yellow-red UMBRO logo wth

* * - Unknown me now which kits used in this matches
In season 1977-78, Liverpool used away shirt with special embroidery, for match
League Cup Final (18.03.1978).
My pages about history of Liverpool shirts in 1977-78, most
likely, contain mistakes in dating use of a away kits. Why it is difficult, not so it is a
lot of photos (at me) these years and very little where there is a date when the photo is
made.

Can say what more matches season 1977-78 with away shirt was
used away shorts (Kenny Dalglish) with UMBRO logo on left side shorts. Difficult now say,
UMBRO logo was printed or embroidery.
In end season
1977-78, Liverpool start used away shorts with Liverbird, on right side shorts, Liverbird
& L.F.C. and UMBRO logo was embroidery.
I think what first away shorts with Liverbird & L.F.C.
and UMBRO logo (Jimmy Case) was use in neutral League Cup Final match versus Nottingham
Forest (18.03.1978).
How to distinguish a shirt of a season 1976-77, from a shirt of a season 1977-78,
very difficultly. Certainly, were for this time of change in design of a labels Umbro, and
certainly since a season 1976-77 it is various color of logo UMBRO & Liverbird.

Difficult write which design home goalkeeper shirts was used

In a season 1976-77 the design home goalkeeper shirt has changed. Liverpool used
