Liverpool to show respect with poppy shirts on
Remembrance Sunday

Liverpool will play in shirts embellished with poppies when they host Manchester
City at Anfield on Remembrance Sunday.
The team will sign their jerseys, worn to commemorate those who have sacrificed
themselves to secure and protect our freedom, after this weekend's match and donate them
to the Royal British Legion for auction to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal.
Last year, the special edition shirts worn by the Reds during the fixture against
Fulham raised Ј22,366 for the Royal British Legion.
To date, the auctioning of Premier League match-worn poppy shirts has helped to
raise Ј1.6 million for the charity.
These vital funds help the organisation support today's generation of armed forces
families and veterans, whether they are living with an injury or illness, coping with
bereavement or finding employment.
Prior to kick-off, the teams will be led onto the pitch by Royal British Legion
standard bearers Lyndsey Taggart and Eddie Flaherty, along with two service men from the
Royal Navy - petty officer Michael T Bishop and leading hand Steve Haig, who will signal
the minute's silence.
Petty officer Bishop said: “In the 80s, from a warship mid-Atlantic, the buzz and
crackle of the BBC world service radio, a commentary from the 3pm game, with shipmates
cramped around a tiny wall speaker, I would listen to my team.
"After 39 years and still in the Royal Navy by nature of my employment,
getting to a game is often impossible but over the years through conflict and peace LFC
was always with me, I never walked alone then and it’s still the same today.
"Let’s remember the fallen who never came back and the families they left
behind, lest we forget. It’s a privilege to be in the club’s company this weekend.”
Claire Rowcliffe, director of fundraising at the Royal British Legion, added: “We
are extremely grateful for the support the Premier League clubs and the football community
show the Poppy Appeal every year.
“The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support, so
please wear your poppy with pride, knowing you have made a real difference to the lives of
service men and women, veterans and their loved ones.”
The LFC Poppy Pin, which features the club crest and Royal British Legion Poppy, is
on sale now in the LFC club stores at Anfield, Liverpool One and Williamson Square.
One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised from sale of the badge will go directly
to the Royal British Legion.

LFC poppy shirts raise record-breaking funds for
Royal British Legion

Twenty commemorative Liverpool FC poppy jerseys specially produced for Remembrance
Day have raised more than Ј52,000 for the Royal British Legion – thanks to our fans'
generosity.
The huge figure, which smashed the Ј22,000 amount raised from the shirts that were
worn during the Reds’ fixture against Fulham in 2018, is the highest ever raised by any
Premier League club’s poppy shirt auction.
The record-breaking shirts were worn during the home win over Manchester City in
November to commemorate those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our
freedom.
All of the funds raised help the Royal British Legion to support today’s
generation of armed forces families and veterans, whether they are living with an injury
or illness, coping with bereavement or finding employment.
Some examples of how the RBL could use these funds include: funding 13 people to
enrol in a week-long multi-activity course for an individual at the RBL’s Battle Back
Centre, which helps wounded, injured and sick service personnel to rehabilitate using
adaptive sport and adventure activities; or funding an experienced care home manager for
just over a year providing a home from home for veterans, ensuring they receive the
quality of care they need and deserve.
“The Legion would like to thank Liverpool Football Club for all its support
during the Poppy Appeal,” said Chris Vernazza, corporate partnerships manager at the
Royal British Legion.
“Having the poppy worn on their shirts has not only helped uphold the memory of
the fallen, it has also generated such an incredible amount to help make a real difference
to the lives of service men and women, veterans and their loved ones.”

Liverpool FC supports 'Heads Up Weekends' campaign

Liverpool FC supports Heads Up Weekends, a campaign aimed at kicking off a
conversation around mental health.
For two weekends in February, every football team from across the Premier League,
Football League, National League, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship and Women’s
National League will dedicate their matches to Heads Up, a partnership between The FA and
Heads Together.
Spearheaded by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, the season-long Heads Up campaign aims to
harness the influence and popularity of football to normalise the conversation around
mental health, working closely with charity partners Mind, CALM and Sporting Chance.
The Heads Up Weekends will highlight the power of talking as a way to support one
another and dispel stigma, with activity planned at fixtures across the men’s and women’s
football calendar.
Over February 8-9 and 14-17, clubs of all levels will feature Heads Up branding
across stadiums, programmes and player kit, in a major unifying moment that aims to get
the nation talking about mental health. Liverpool travel to Norwich City on Saturday
February 15 and fans are encouraged to join the conversation using the hashtags
#KickOffAConversation and #HeadsUp.
It follows the results of a survey which showed that while football is the number
one topic of conversation (75 per cent) between fans and their friends, only 34 per cent
of fans regularly talk about mental health with their friends.
In January, Heads Up teamed up with PHE’s Every Mind Matters in a historic first
to delay all matches in the FA Cup third round by 60 seconds to encourage fans to ‘take
a minute’ to start looking after their mental health.

Proceeds from the match will be directed towards the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, a
charity set up by Stephen Darby and close friend Chris Rimmer.
Bradford City legend Darby was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last October,
forcing his retirement from football aged just 30 - while Rimmer has been suffering since
2015.
